The Changing Landscape of College Education: Toward a Culturally Relevant Pedagogical Approach in Online Courses

Abstract

Given the shift toward online learning across various universities, as well as the push toward diverse learning communities that are inclusive of students from a wide range of backgrounds, college campuses must consider how to best educate minority students and do so in the age of online learning. As Smith and Ayers (2006) note, “technologically mediated learning experiences may accommodate the singularities of a dominant Western culture at the expense of cultural responsiveness to the cultural backgrounds of all participants” (p. 16). Consequently, professors must examine how online learning potentially reinforces dominant discourses of learning in both curriculum delivery and course content. The purpose of this study is to understand and describe minority students’ online learning experiences.
