Poster #61 - Inspired to Excel: Benefits of an African-Centered and Culturally Relevant Pre-Kindergarten Summer Learning Program

Tue, April 9, 8:00 to 9:30am, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 300 Level, Hall C

Abstract

The early years is a critical, formative period during which experiences and environments facilitate development. Canada’s largest school district offered Inspired to Excel, a free 4-week pre-Kindergarten summer learning program at several school sites for three consecutive years. This unique program focused on supporting young children’s transition into formal schooling within an African-centred and culturally relevant and responsive pedagogical framework. Qualitative and quantitative data were obtained from focus groups, student progress reports and parent surveys. The authors found that participating children (average age of 3.9 years) made considerable gains in school readiness (e.g., sense of belonging, self-regulation, expression, and engagement) and literacy and mathematics knowledge. Parents and educators were also positively affected by their involvement in the program.
