Activation and Interaction of a Network of Resources by New Teachers

Abstract

Although it is known that new teachers need support, little is known about the types of resources new teachers activate in the early years of teaching. Therefore, this paper focuses on the resources new teachers activate and how those resources interact in instructional contexts. The participants were 15 new secondary science teachers. Data sources included: a pre-interview, teaching observations, and a post-interview. Findings revealed that the teachers had a variety of resources available to them, of which social resources were specifically important. In addition, there were interactions of resources in the new teachers’ context that led to the development of the Network of Resources model to represent how multiple types of resources can interact to support a new teacher.
