Bilingual Education in a Post-English-Only Era in California: Teachers' Journeys (Back) Into Bilingual Classrooms

Sun, April 7, 3:40 to 5:10pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 800 Level, Hall F

Abstract

This research examines the journey of California teachers as they prepare to be reintegrated into bilingual classrooms after the reversal of Proposition 227. In preparation for the expansion of its bilingual education program, a major school district in California's San Joaquin Valley sought the support from faculty at the local school of education to design and teach a Bilingual Teacher Academy (BTA). The BTA aimed to ensure that teachers were equipped with current pedagogical frameworks and practices in bilingual education before entering their new teaching assignments. This course sets an important precedent and model of integration/reintegration for school districts across the state, as the findings provide significant guidance for the design and implementation of effective bilingual teacher education.
