Abstract

The purpose of the study was to investigate the experience of First-Generation Community College Students (FGCCS) by examining the unique effects of the “Student Intent to Transfer Model” for Black, Hispanic/Latina(o) and white students. Data derived from the Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE) 2014 three-year cohort data (N=108,509) of over 600 participating two-year colleges. By using a combination of theoretical and conceptual frameworks, the study tested a hypothetical model and builds on the concept of student engagement, which is widely cited in the literature. However, other factors such as college finance, transfer student capital, new engagement constructs, support and institutional agents, and college culture are important factors that uniquely add to the literature.
