We investigate youths’ science learning in university-sponsored summer camps with a personal genetics approach. Learners are 47 youths aged 11 to 14 in two camps. Methods used include t-tests, regressions, and correlations conducted on pre- and post-test genetic assessments; self-report questionnaires on science identity, family’s views of science, views of school and out-of-school science, and work habits; science curiosity measure; and daily workbook entries. Findings show that the personal genetics curriculum supported learners to gain concepts related to heredity, genotype, and phenotype. Youths’ prior knowledge, families’ views on science, and youths’ identity, work habits, and affiliation towards science predicted knowledge gains. The study’s results generate insights into the design of learning environments to broaden youths’ participation in science.
