Because the missions of higher education are numerous and variable with time, justifying higher education’s value to various constituents proves to be challenging. This study aims to examine mission statement evolution in the western New York area in an attempt to solidify mission themes locally and suggest changes in overall mission nationally. The sample includes mission statements from twelve local institutions. It also examines archival evidence of individual institutional mission statements from their inception (as far back as 1845), to the 1960s, the 1990s, and the present day. Preliminary findings reveal patterns based on institutional type and date, but further analysis may reveal themes which could help solidify purpose and justify the attainment of a higher education.
