Poster #48 - Examining the Powerful Potential of Digital Storytelling: Preparing Candidates to Integrate Multimodal Composing

Tue, April 9, 10:25 to 11:55am, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 300 Level, Hall C

Abstract

Colwell and Hutchison (2015) identified the positive effects of using digital tools in the classroom. Among these are opportunities for students to compose texts that can be shared with authentic audiences and to apply content in new ways. Therefore, it is essential that teacher candidates are prepared to integrate technology into the English Language Arts classroom (Karchmer-Klein, 2013). The purpose of this exploratory case-study research was to examine how teacher education students used the affordances of multimodal, digital tools to compose digital personal narratives. In addition, we wanted to understand how they made meaning of the process of digital composing and understood their design choices. Finally, we examined how their experiences as composers of digital narratives influenced their pedagogical thinking.
