This paper describes first-year students’ perspectives of learning experiences that influence their decision to continue working toward a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM). By examining their perspectives, this study gives voice to students who are involved in university initiatives whose goal is to recruit and retain students in STEM programs. One finding involved relationships between course content and assessments, and another finding was about the type of support that first-year STEM students received from faculty and peers. This study contributes to our understanding of how first-year students are responding to initiatives that are designed to support their success and retention in STEM programs, and can be used to help universities shape those initiatives to meet students’ needs.
