Studying the Benefits for In-Service Teachers Within In Situ Teacher Education Methods Courses

Sat, April 6, 4:10 to 5:40pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 800 Level, Hall G

Abstract

Now in our seventh year, this university-school district partnership was designed to support teacher candidates to develop rich socio-cultural understandings of literacy learning and pedagogy and to offer in-service teachers opportunities to refine their knowledge of, in and for practice (Cochran-Smith & Lytle, 2009). While there has been research on the benefits of in situ teacher methods courses for teacher candidates, we sought to understand the benefits and learning for school-based in-service teachers who participate in such initiatives as called for in the research literature (Jacobs Henry, et al., 2010; Schlusser, 2006; Taylor & Sobel, 2003).
