Sun, April 7, 8:00 to 9:30am, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 800 Level, Hall G

Abstract

The purpose of this action research study was to determine the effectiveness of twelve strategies to teach pragmatic competence to English Language Learners (ELLs). This study collected data using 12 teaching strategies as discussed by Hillard (2017). The participants included middle school English as a Second Language teacher (ESL) students in the northeast region of the United States. As the teacher researcher, it was important to create effective learning opportunities that directly benefit the development of pragmatic competence and to determine what methods were the most effective. The results of the study showed how effective Hillard (2017) twelve strategies were regarding the carryover of skills in both written and oral communication.
