To date, no studies appear to have focused on literacy experiences and understandings of Black women in a university setting via a Black Girl Literacies and Black Girlhood theoretical approaches. To gather this data, I used a Critical Racialized Instructional framework where questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, and reflective journaling took place. A literacy approach that humanizes and liberates Black women from that role of serving as “prop in the narratives of Black men” will lead to implications that benefit the current scholarship and research in literacy education by addressing the gap and neglect of social positioning and literacy pedagogy regarding Black women.
