Abstract

Colleges and universities are increasingly called on to prepare students for the demands of democracy. Students’ ability to rise to these challenges depends in part on the development of political fluency or the self-awareness of political understanding, resources, and outcomes that constitute political identity. As of yet, very little research centers on how political fluency is linked to creative processes found within fine and performing arts programs. Given the significance of the classroom as a site at which college students potentially engage with politics, the purpose of this research is to illuminate connections between creative processes and students’ acquisition of political fluency, thereby providing a vision for arts practices that serve as necessary contributors to a flourishing democratic society.
