The Contemporary Work of Principals and Vice-Principals in Ontario: A Comparative Study

Fri, April 5, 2:25 to 3:55pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 800 Level, Hall F

Abstract

Changes to recent practices and policies have resulted in the changing nature of principals’ and vice-principals’ work, threatening their recruitment, retention, job performance, and potentially overall school performance. This quantitative study compares the results from two survey research conducted with principals and VPs in Ontario, Canada between 2012–2016, and examines the concept of work and its diverse and complex nature that affects how principals and vice-principals carry out their duties and responsibilities in contemporary times. The study presents findings on how school principals and vice-principals approach their work and how they spend their time, explores the behavioural, cognitive, and emotional elements of principals’ and vice-principals’ work, and identifies the challenges and possibilities their work presents to them.
