Poster #3 - Collaboration and Problem-Solving Outcomes Among Seventh-Grade Mathematics Students

Abstract

There is an ongoing need for evidence of the ways in which classroom practices such as group work can support learning of mathematics content. With this study we asked, what is the relationship between students’ collaboration during group work and the outcomes of their problem solving? We analyzed students’ interactions and written work from two in-class lessons centered around open-ended tasks, using discourse analysis to document the degree of students’ collaboration in groups. Instances of more collaborative group work correlated with higher scores on students’ written work, even though students overall had similar scores across the two lessons. This finding warrants efforts to establish time and norms for equitable participation during group work in mathematics classes.
