The underrepresentation of Black men in engineering highlights a missing segment of the population who could contribute to the global knowledge economy. Additional research on the strategies that aid in Black men's success in engineering pathways is needed to address this national concern. This study explores the sources of motivation that influence 44 Black men in engineering graduate programs to persist. The findings reveal several internal (i.e., self-coaching, personal and career goals) and external (i.e., peers, family members, and representation) sources of motivation. We conclude with implications for future research and professional practice that will improve the experiences of Black men in engineering graduate programs.
