Democratic Values in Vietnamese Secondary Schools: Perspectives of Students, Teachers, and School Managers

Abstract

Democracy is not a new concept, but it is still a sensitive one in a communist country. Although many studies have addressed democracy in education around the world, so far, research on democratic education in the context of the communist society like Vietnam has been scarce. In this study, a series of in-depth interviews with 40 participants from Vietnamese secondary schools were conducted aimed at providing insights into the perspectives on Educational Democratic Values (EDVs) of various stakeholders in Vietnamese secondary schools. Accordingly, 17 values have been identified by the participants as EDVs, similar to what has been found in the international literature. Besides, the new values are also found, which are associated with Vietnam’s culture and social context.
