Abstract

The research has indicated that reading motivation is multidimensional. The adaptive reading motivation measure (ARMM) developers originally found that a bi-factor model that accounted for both a general reading motivation factor and sub-factors fit the data better than a univariate model (Kingston et al., 2017). However, some validation results did not agree with past research. The current study fit two hierarchical models, a bi-factor model and higher-order cognitive diagnostic model (HO-CDM), to the ARMM data to examine fit and relationships with other variables as validation. The results indicated that the HO-CDM fit the data better than the bi-factor model while also producing validation results similar to past research. The results of this study also provided evidence of a hierarchical structure.
