We examine a STEM-focused out-of-school learning environment designed with equity in mind for nondominant youth. Drawing upon culturally responsive computing frameworks, we investigate how computer science teachers endeavored to implement equity-focused teaching practices, as well as how youth engaged with computing in the learning environment. We analyze observational, interview, and survey data from a mixed methods study of seven computer science teachers and 193 learners to reveal how teachers’ practices were (mis)aligned with CRC principles and increased learners’ engagement and interest. This study contributes to our understanding of the complexities of navigating learning environments designed with equity in mind, including the tensions that will arise and how teachers can address these issues to provide even richer learning opportunity for students.
