Immigrant Minority Youth in the United States and Canada: Listening to Ignored Voices

Abstract

Despite decades of social justice research and social movements, social inequality and racial hierarchies have been maintained, reproduced, and reinforced in the North American contexts, especially in a “Post-Truth” era. In this presentation, we explore why racial inequality persists by examining integration problems reported by immigrant minority youth in the United States and Canada. Drawing on both quantitative and qualitative data which were collected at Berkeley, CA and Vancouver, BC, we will discuss how immigrant minority youth perceive their educational experiences, and what are the factors that affect their high school and university experiences and identity construction.
