This study examined how DACAmented individuals’ experiences are shaped by shifts in political climate and discourses. I examined their experiences prior to DACA, and under the Obama and Trump administrations. I conducted a Critical Discourse Analysis of two national press conferences to examine how discourse surrounding DACA perpetuates conflicting ideologies. I conducted a series of phenomenological interviews with DACAmented individuals. The conceptual framework that guided this study draws from Critical Race Theory, Latina/Latino critical theory, the theorization of racist nativism, and Critical Language Study. Findings evidenced the harmful consequences of xenophobic policies. Policymakers who claim to be immigrant allies perpetuate oppression through policy and discourse. DACAmented people’s comfort navigating educational and social institutions is shaped by policy and discourse.
