There is a push for students of all backgrounds to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Science laboratory experiences are critical in order for students to develop an understanding of scientific inquiry. This nationwide study of 740 secondary science teachers examined funding for science instructional materials. The study found significant differences in levels of funding for science teachers in urban, rural, and suburban schools. Teachers in suburban areas reported receiving 2.5 times more funds than teachers in urban areas and 1.3 times more funds than teachers in rural areas. The implications of this differential funding are examined in the light of learning opportunities for disadvantaged youth.
