A Self-Study of Mathematics Teacher Educators in a Blended Mathematics Specialist Program

Abstract

Self-study involves examination of one’s teaching practice through critical reflection with a colleague. Mathematics teacher educators engaged in a self-study, reflecting on their own teaching practice while implementing an online, synchronous, capstone course in a blended (online and face-to-face) advanced licensure program for mathematics specialists. Through weekly reflections on past iterations, and current teachings of the course, the teacher educators learned how to better design learning experiences to develop effective mathematics specialists and teacher leaders. Additionally, the educators developed a strong sense of community between one another, built on honest and critical reflections, which led to an increased awareness of what it means to be a teacher educator of mathematics specialists.
