Abstract

New models for preparing early career researchers are needed. Arts-based educational research (ABER) practices are filled with possibilities for redesigning researcher education. What helps novice researchers learn to visualize the lives they encounter while creating ethnographies? And how do they learn to increase their visual literacy in order to absorb and understand the lives they are curious about? This paper will share the results of innovative pedagogical experiments using photographic arts as ways of seeing and knowing to better prepare early career researchers. Different ways visual literacy shapes the qualitative researcher are explored and the how the photographic arts can be used to teach researchers how to collect, interpret, and present qualitative research.
