Better Than Apples to Oranges: Using SIGs to Directly Compare Student and Teacher Creativity Perceptions

Mon, April 8, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 800 Level, Hall G

Abstract

This study investigated the use of the Scales for Identifying Gifted Students Creativity subscale as a student self-perception measure (S-SIGS-C). Students (N = 236) completed the S-SIGS-C, the Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking-Figural (TTCT), and two items measuring creativity in general and in school. While results provided some support for reliability and validity, students self-perceptions of their creativity in school were not aligned with their creativity overall. Despite responding to the same items, teachers and students showed discrepancies. Overall, this study (a) applies a new approach, IRT, to exploring the S-SIGS-C, (b) identifies areas for scale improvement, (c) demonstrates the complexity of self-perceptions even within a single subscale, and (d) facilitates direct comparison between teacher and student creativity perceptions.
