Protest Politics and Organized Resistance in Intercollegiate Athletics

Tue, April 9, 8:00 to 9:30am, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 200 Level, Room 202B

Abstract

In 2015 at the University of Missouri, the Mizzou football team and coaching staff initiated a strike from participation in football activities in an act of solidarity against racial injustice on-campus. Still, the legacy of protest in intercollegiate athletics preceding and following the events at Mizzou indicate student-athlete’s participation in activism has not been uncommon. This chapter explores the contemporary relationship between protest and intercollegiate athletics and the challenges presented by existing structures of power in college sports.
