Students' Interactions With Faculty and Academic Achievement

Abstract

Research indicates that students’ relationships with faculty can positively impact their academic achievement (Ullah & Wilson, 2007). Undergraduate grade point average is a common measure of academic success. Hierarchical linear modeling was used to examine differences in the relationship between students’ interactions with faculty and their GPA, depending on individual students’ gender and race/ethnicity and characteristics of their college. While interactions with faculty were positively associated with GPA, the benefit of interacting with faculty was diminished for women and students of color attending private schools and highly selective schools, respectively.
