Are Teachers Prepared to Teach Multilingual Learners in U.S. Public Schools?

Abstract

This study examined teachers’ perceptions of preparedness across teacher groups. The findings suggest that ELL teachers reported lower preparedness than mainstream classroom teachers with or without ELLs in the classroom. Mainstream teachers with ELLs in the classroom were less preparedness in differentiating instruction than their counterparts without ELLs. Elementary ELL teachers felt less prepared than their secondary counterparts. Lastly, teacher preparedness is positively related to their highest degree earned and the number of methods courses during teacher preparation programs.
