Poster #22 - The Impact of Engineering Design Training on Preservice Teachers' STEM Teaching

Sun, April 7, 8:00 to 9:30am, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 300 Level, Hall C

Abstract

In this study we examined the impact of engineering design training on pre-service teachers’ STEM teaching. Participants attended a training introducing engineering, engineering design, and educational robotics (Hummingbird Robotics). They then worked in groups to assemble and program their robot and designed a lesson incorporating engineering design in science classrooms. Data sources included pre- and post-surveys, interviews, and the lesson plans participants designed. Results show that pre-service teachers’ confidence in integrating science and engineering significantly increased. Although they encountered difficulties in designing, assembling, and programming robots, they enjoyed the hands-on project and learning how to integrate engineering into science classrooms. In general, pre-service teachers can develop lesson plans that provide a motivating context and integrate science and engineering appropriately.
