Abstract

Although the vocational and economic purposes of the STEM education movement are quite clear, (Williams, 2011), what remains unclear— and largely unexamined—is how STEM education works as a type of environmental education. To begin answering this question, this paper presents a case study of an environmentally focused STEM school (E-STEM Academy) in a state recognized for its innovative approach to STEM education policy. The primary objective of the paper is to create new knowledge about the convergence between STEM and environmental education (Wals, Brody, Dillon, & Stevenson, 2014). This knowledge will be significantly useful to environmental educators interested in STEM and/or specialized STEM schools and will help EE more actively engage the STEM education movement.
