Beyond Status Quo: Defining Black Girlhood Spirituality

Abstract

In this paper I provide a definition of Black girlhood spirituality as one that mobilizes ideas to transforms circumstances, which challenges status quo ideas of spirituality through demonstrating the ways that spirituality is intimately linked to what is considered to be knowledge. First, I engage major concepts from the theoretical frameworks that undergird this work: Black feminism, womanism, and Black girlhood. Next, I offer a detailed definition of Black girlhood spirituality and provide ethnographic examples from Saving Our Lives Hear Our Truths (SOLHOT), a praxis that centers and celebrates Black girlhood through artistic and radical imagination for the purpose of otherworld making.
