Quality Content Teaching for Multilingual Students: An International Examination of Instructional Practices in Four Nations

Tue, April 9, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 800 Level, Hall F

Abstract

This study, Observations of Pedagogical Excellence of Teaching Across Nations or OPETAN, which means, “I teach,” in Finnish, includes 32 observations of content teachers with reputations for excellence working with multilingual students across four countries: Germany, Finland, the US and the UK. Grounded in critical sociocultural theory as operationalized into critical sociocultural instructional practices with the Standards for Effective Pedagogy (Authors, 2013), this study illustrates the excellence that is occurring across these four different national contexts as well as the possibilities and opportunities for growth that exist as well.
