"Trouble Will (Not) Bury Me Down": Narratives of Black Women Faculty Experiences in Intergroup Dialogue

Sat, April 6, 10:25 to 11:55am, Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel, Floor: Second Floor, Kent

Abstract

Faculty women of Color make significant contributions to higher education through scholarly research, innovative teaching, and commitment to service (Turner, 2002). Yet, universities continue to be racialized and gendered spaces that perpetuate the marginalization of women of Color (WOC) (Solórzano, Ceja, & Yosso, 2000). In this study, we use critical discourse analysis and narrative analysis to more deeply understand how two Black women faculty members construct narratives framing their experience in a professional development (PD) program grounded in intergroup dialogue at a White serving institution of higher education (WSI). Examining these narratives will demonstrate how Black women expose systemic inequities and resist (or potentially reinscribe) their devaluation by “burying” their emotions in response to racial battle fatigue (RBF) in academia.
