This paper documents results from a research center studying research use. The center is conducting a series of studies, the first of which involves developing and validating a set of surveys to measure the depth of research use and dissemination strategies. A goal is to understand the barriers to research use in education from the perspective of both practitioners and researchers. Presented here are results from a pilot of the practitioner survey with over 900 educators from 31 schools, a pilot of the researcher survey, and exploratory interviews. Specifically, this study reports on the characteristics of research products practitioners value and compares them with the characteristics of research products that research-producers believe are important when targeting a practitioner audience.
