Surveilled, Singled Out, and Sentenced: An Assumption of Criminality for Black Males in Early Learning

Sat, April 6, 4:10 to 5:40pm, Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel, Floor: Mezzanine, Pine West

Abstract

Over the past several decades, there has been increasing attention paid to the experiences and outcomes of Black males in education. While this literature base has rigorously investigated their experiences in high school and college settings, very little research has focused on early childhood education. Using a critical race counterstorytelling methodology, this study sought to illuminate the experiences of the parents of Black children in early education. Specifically, this study employed the lens of racial microaggressions to examine how an assumption of criminality manifests in this setting as documented by the narratives of parents.
