Abstract

While a greater proportion of high school graduates are enrolling in college, many African-American students who aspire to attend college fail to enroll. This comparative case study of two majority African-American schools examines the relationship between socioeconomic composition and the organization of the college choice process through the lens of organizational habitus. An analysis of observation notes, interviews, and relevant documents indicate that varying socioeconomic composition present distinct challenges for the school choice process and influence enrollment through the organization of college choice resources.
