Poster #6 - An Elementary Literacy Program That Emerged From Reading Experiences Under Political Occupation

Sat, April 6, 8:00 to 9:30am, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 300 Level, Hall C

Abstract

This is an autoethnographic self-study investigation of my reading experience under occupation. It explains how my experience under political occupation influenced my efforts to motivate elementary school students to read. This autoethnographic provided an opportunity to share my own lived experience with literacy. I found that my reading experience inspired me to be a librarian to help students. I want to motivate them to read. My findings showed that the reading passport program I developed increased student reading motivation. This is a significant narrative because it adds to the limited literature on the effect of occupation on children’s literacy. This study will also add to the limited research on teachers’ reading experiences and how they translate into their teaching.
