Development of a Persistence Survey for Faculty in Engineering Framed in Intersectionality of Gender, Race, and Class

Abstract

Women, people of color, and people from economically disadvantaged backgrounds are underrepresented as faculty in departments of engineering (Martinez, O'Brien, & Hebl, 2017; Wise & Simmons, 2017). Methodologically, one of the challenges of studying this inequality has been the compartmentalization of faculty identities—that is, inequality is typically studied along a single axis of gender, race, or class. In this paper, authors address this gap in the literature by showing the process of validating a survey that measures persistence of faculty in engineering departments.
