A Conceptual Model of a Community-University Partnership for a Resident-Led After-School Program

Abstract

This paper presents a resident-led, university-assisted model for delivering out-of-school time (OST) education within a community center located in a low income urban neighborhood. The university partnered with a resident council of a public-assistance housing community to operate an afterschool program and summer camp. Resident-based staff provided instruction and administrative supervision of the daily operations. University-based staff provided fiscal management, purchased curriculum, professional development, and conducted program evaluation. Results highlight best practices for engaging in community partnerships, including the presence of: contextual understanding, transparency, joint-decision making, responsiveness, and sustainability efforts. The significance lies in the potential for this model to be replicated in other low-income urban communities as a way for universities to engage in meaningful partnerships for collective impact.
