The purpose of this paper is to provide background and preliminary findings from Years 1 and 2 of a three-year, U.S. Department of Education-funded project to integrate cooperative learning into university pre-calculus course at a Hispanic Serving Institution on the US-Mexico border. The overarching goal of the project is to increase student learning and success, particularly among Latinx undergraduates, in college-level pre-calculus through the implementation of cooperative learning activities and the creation of learning communities in required weekly workshops connected to pre-calculus lectures. In this paper, we draw on mixed methods to highlight the process, salient challenges, and impacts of integrating cooperative learning into 24 pre-calculus workshops, which reached 1,080 students, during 2017-2018.
