Academia bases much of its merit review on authorship at all stages of the hiring cycle. Because of the emphasis on authorship in many academic fields, scholars are beginning to discuss the ethics of authorship, including practices that can dilute the meaning of authorship, especially for assistant faculty members and graduate students. This mix methods study explores how researchers, including faculty and graduate students, discuss and decipher authorship.
