Goal-Oriented Learning Is as Effective as Mastery Learning Provided by Cognitive Tutor

Abstract

The effect of Learning by Teaching and learning by being tutored was compared for learning linear equations. Three versions of an online learning environment were created: (1) APLUS for Learning by Teaching, (2) APLUSTUTOR that is an intelligent tutoring system (ITS) without the adaptive problem selection, and (3) COGTUTOR+ that is equivalent to the traditional cognitive tutor ITS. A randomized controlled study was conducted in two public schools with 184 7th and 8th grade students. The results showed that (i) students’ in the APLUSTUTOR condition achieved the completion criterion quicker than students in the APLUS condition, and (ii) there was no notable difference on the post-test score between three conditions.
