Test-takers can experience a variety of emotions during assessments and they must regulate their emotions to perform their best. There is limited research on the connection between emotional regulation ability and moment-to-moment emotion experiences during an assessment. We investigated the relationship between emotion regulation ability, moment-to-moment emotions, and performance on two low-stakes assessments. We found that emotion regulation ability was related to both performance and emotions experienced. The relationship between experienced emotions and regulation ability varied based on valence (positive vs. negative) and intensity (low vs. medium vs. high). The way in which experienced emotions mediated the relationship between emotion regulation ability and performance was also explored.
