Dilemmas in the Profession of Teaching

Sun, April 7, 9:55 to 11:25am, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 800 Level, Hall G

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to present findings from a study of K-12 teachers (N=127) in 19 states and the District of Columbia that investigates the ethical challenges that they face during their careers. This is one part of a larger project that uses both empirical research and the tools of philosophy and professional ethics to articulate a conception of “professional teacher” and offer guidance about how teachers can be better prepared to think about some of the ethical challenges they are likely to face in their careers. In this paper, we focus on the empirical part of the project to discuss the common dilemmas that teachers encounter.
