Shaping the Lives of Immigrant Youth in North Carolina Through Sustained Community Engagement and Outreach

Abstract

After school community organizations provide critical academic support to immigrant youth. This study presents student interview data from ten youth participants from Burma, Bhutan, and Nepal and survey data from thirty nine teachers from a two year longitudinal study conducted within one urban community based non profit organization in North Carolina that has served over 350 newly arrived immigrant and refugee students in grades K-8 in an after school program since 2010. Specifically, this study focuses on the following research question: How has one community based organization shaped the lives of middle school immigrant students living in North Carolina?
