Disrupting Disruptions: Nurturing a Pedagogical Culture of Access and Inclusion in the Digital Age

Sat, April 6, 4:10 to 5:40pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 800 Level, Hall F

Abstract

Technology has created enormous disruptions in higher education that influence every aspect of where, when, why and how teaching and learning occur, and who can be involved in the process. Support infrastructures have emerged to help navigate the complexity that educational technologies create, from curricular and logistical concerns, to issues of learning and access.
Addressing digital diversity and inclusivity in these realms means honouring our students’ varied needs and experiences while allowing agency to those who teach.
Drawing from the Universal Design for Learning and Digital Inclusion models, this presentation explores how new diversities challenge institutions’ abilities to create and sustain technological systems for learning.
The author will propose that we have responded to technological complexities by creating pedagogical technocracies that remove agency and power from individuals, especially those most vulnerable to exclusion.
Participants will be challenged to adopt more digitally inclusive frameworks for their teaching and use collegial communities to create sustainable networks across institutions
