The elementary school years are a critical developmental stage that sets the foundation for what follows. It is also a key transition period posing many challenges. The present study aims to examine heterogeneity in how children’s behavioral and emotional trajectories unfold as they enter into and progress through elementary school, and identify which early factors serve as antecedents of divergent pathways. Applying latent class growth modeling to a nationally representative sample of school-aged children, our study revealed more dynamic and changing patterns of behavioral and emotional development than previously documented. We also found differences in early factors at work for behavioral and emotional outcomes. Our findings highlight the need for interventions tailored to each distinct pattern of development.
