Language Development and Transcultural Awareness in Teacher Education

Abstract

For a vast majority of pre- and in-service teachers teaching recently immigrated children and adolescents is still challenging. Teachers often do not feel adequately prepared to provide their students with high quality support in their classrooms. Teacher education programs in Germany slowly change correspondingly by offering specifically suited programs. However, if and how well these opportunities to learn lead to a development was under investigation in the presented study. Results from different evaluation tools and questionings show that pre-service teachers’ expertise regarding multilingual and multicultural learners and various settings can be increased by the module presented in this paper.
