Building Evaluation Capacity and Infrastructure Throughout a National Network of Future STEM Faculty Training Programs

Abstract

The current study focuses on an established network of 40 universities located across the United States and Canada, where each network member implements a program focused on preparing future faculty (i.e., graduate students and postdocs) in effective teaching pedagogy. Several evaluation reports have provided evidence of participant impacts in some member institutions, including knowledge gains, attitude shifts, and enhanced teaching aspirations. As this network continues to grow, however, key program stakeholders have expressed a need to assess cross-institutional impact. The present investigation demonstrates how to address this goal in one established program using the Systems Evaluation Protocol (Urban & Trochim, 2009) to help local programs develop evaluation plans that are aligned in approach and are scalable across the entire network.
