Integrating Block-Based Coding Into Scientific Modeling Lessons

Abstract

National learning standards state that K-12 students need to (1) construct and develop scientific models through inquiry activities and (2) learn to solve real-world problems using computational concepts and processes, such as coding. Through block-based coding, students can simulate science phenomena and possibly develop their scientific models while honing computational skills. This study implemented Coding in Scientific Modeling Lessons (CS-ModeL), an online system for scaffolding science teachers’ learning to design scientific modeling lessons with coding. Results showed that teachers perceive benefits of coding for scientific modeling though they struggle to design authentic scientific inquiry activities and to address coding as a skill in lessons. Such findings have important implications for future research and training on teaching scientific modeling through coding.
